The web half, examined

A fractional web team that ships the page, words and all

A fractional web team is a senior developer and web designer you retain by the hour: $150/hr, 50-hour monthly minimum, about $7,500/mo, month-to-month. The structural difference from hiring a dev shop is that our design, video and copywriting sit on the same pool of hours, so a landing page arrives designed, written and built by one team instead of assembled across three vendors.

What the web hours cover

Marketing-site work, mostly, done at senior speed. Landing pages for this quarter’s campaign. Full redesigns. New sections, new templates, CMS work, forms and integrations, and the fixes that pile up in a backlog nobody owns. We build in Webflow, WordPress, and HubSpot, and we write custom code when a campaign needs a micro-site those platforms can’t express.

The person on the other end of the Slack channel is a senior developer with 15+ years, working next to our creative director and a senior designer with 12. Because the disciplines share one pool of hours, the sequence that usually takes three vendors — design agency, copywriter, dev shop — collapses into one thread. You approve a design; the same team writes it and builds it. Nothing waits in a hand-off folder.

Two mechanics are worth knowing. Unused hours roll over month-to-month, capped at 100% of the month’s retained hours, which suits web work’s lumpy rhythm: quiet in March, a redesign in April. And priorities move by message, mid-month — hours don’t care what they’re spent on.

The build history behind the pitch

Every claim above has shipped work behind it, published under our work.

Saviynt

A full website redesign plus custom-developed micro-sites, inside a 4+ year, 10,000+ hour agency-of-record run. The company raised $205M on the NYSE after the brand update.

Coalesce

Key web pages rebuilt with clarity and enhanced animations under a retainer now past 3 years, through their $50M Series B.

NAVIS

The website through a 3+ year, 8,000+ hour retainer and a rebrand, completed before Revinate acquired them.

SourceWhale

A website redesign that helped lift conversion 22%.

On speed, one line covers it: starting takes days rather than the 3–6 months an in-house dev hire does, and our published comparison is 20x faster than hiring. How the throughput happens is equally short: AI does the production, and the senior developer spends the billed hours on judgment.

Rates for web work

Four ways to buy the same senior bench. The retainer is the one the rest of this page describes.

How you buyPriceBest for
Retainer$150/hr, from 50 hrs/mo (≈$7,500)Ongoing site work, a landing-page cadence, redesign phases
Ad-hoc project$200/hrOne-off builds without a monthly commitment
Scale-Ready Website Design$20K fixedA full site, scoped and priced up front
Smaller fixed packagesFrom $2.5KEntry points like the Brand Hero Refresh

For scale: a fully loaded in-house team covering the same ground runs $300–800K a year at 50–60% productive utilization, and our published client savings against that option run $291K–$498K a year. The calculator does your version of that math in about a minute.

Why we’re reluctant to sell dev without design

Some buyers arrive wanting pure execution: “we have the designs, just build them.” We take that work when the design system is genuinely strong, and it sometimes is.

But we’ll say on the first call what we believe: most “just build it” projects are carrying a design problem into production, and building a weak design well gets you a weak site, on schedule, with nobody to blame. The 22% conversion lift at SourceWhale came from rebranding and rebuilding together; we don’t think either half alone gets that number. If you only want hands on keyboards, a dev shop will quote you lower than $150/hr and you should probably take it. If you want the site to perform, buy the judgment with the build.

That opinion costs us dev-only deals. We’re comfortable with the trade.

HOW IT WORKS

Fast, flexible,
full-service teams.

STEP 1

Choose how many hours you need

Plans of all sizes: part-time, full-time, startup, enterprise and in between. Retainers start at 50 hours a month — about $7,500 at our flat $150/hr — and scale up through Level 2, Level 3 and Enterprise as the workload grows.
Not sure? Happy to help. Tell us what is on this quarter's list and we will size it with you.
STEP 2

Use those hours for any of our services

Branding, design, development, video or copywriting — one team, one rate. Landing pages, logo and branding, brand guides, web design, Webflow, WordPress and HubSpot builds, slide decks, social media, ebooks, event collateral and infographics.
Big projects, quick fixes, team meetings — we're onboard and ready. Shift the mix month to month as priorities change, with no change orders and no rescoping.
STEP 3

Get brilliant work, quickly and easily

Work directly with senior talent, in real time, wherever you like to work — Slack, Asana, Trello or Notion. No account managers, no ticket queues, and unlimited meetings. Your bench includes a creative director, a senior developer and a senior PM with 15+ years each, plus a senior designer with 12 years behind her.
STEP 4

Easily adjust as your needs change

Adjust your hours month to month, and roll over unused hours, so no hour is wasted. Rollover is capped at one month's retained hours, and you can move between levels whenever the workload changes.
No long-term commitments or gotcha fees — just honest hourly retainers, billed monthly, with 30 days' notice to stop.

Design, development, video and copywriting.

Now put your own in-house costs next to those plans

Every plan above is billed at $150 an hour, and every one of those hours is productive time. The calculator works the other side of the comparison: pick the roles you would otherwise hire, set their salaries, your team size and your overhead, and it totals what that team actually costs you — then sets the number against each tier on this page.

The plans above
Level 1 · 50 hrs / month$7,500/mo
Level 2 · 100 hrs / month$15,000/mo

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

What is a fractional web team?

A senior web designer and developer you retain by the hour instead of hiring: $150/hr with a 50-hour monthly minimum, about $7,500/mo, month-to-month with 30-day cancellation. Design, video, and copywriting share the same pool of hours, so a page ships with its words and imagery, from one team.

Which platforms does the web team build on?

Webflow, WordPress, and HubSpot for marketing sites and landing pages, plus custom-developed micro-sites when a campaign calls for one. The published build history includes Saviynt's website redesign and micro-sites, Coalesce's key-page rebuilds with enhanced animations, and the NAVIS site.

What does a website project cost?

On retainer, hours at $150 each. Outside a retainer, $200/hr ad-hoc, or the fixed-price Scale-Ready Website Design package at $20K. Smaller fixed packages start at $2.5K.

Can the team handle ongoing site maintenance and updates?

That is what the retainer is shaped for: a monthly pool of hours that absorbs updates, new landing pages, and fixes as they come, with unused hours rolling over (capped at 100% of the month's retained hours). Saviynt has run this way for 4+ years and 10,000+ hours.

Do you do web development without design?

We can, and we'll take dev-only work when the design system is genuinely strong. We will tell you on the first call if we think the design underneath is the actual problem, because building a weak design well produces a weak site on schedule.

Who actually does the development work?

A senior developer with 15+ years of experience, working directly with you in Slack, Asana, Trello, or Notion. No ticketing queue, no account-manager relay, unlimited meetings.
